Lecture on 8 October 2025 - "Origin and history of coats of arms and their meaning and use in today's society"

The heraldist and journalist Jörg Mantzsch, who designed the coat of arms of the Börde district, will give a lecture on the creation and history of coats of arms in Haldensleben on 8 October 2025 at 5 pm.

The district of Börde was given a new coat of arms as part of the district reform in 2007. The main motif of the district coat of arms shows the "Hornhäuser Reiter". The "Hornhäuser Reiterstein" found in 1874 served as the model for the coat of arms. How did the motif of the rider's stone become the current coat of arms of the Börde district? Where do its symbolism and colours come from?

In his lecture, Jörg Mantzsch explains the significance of coats of arms as symbols of identity. As such, coats of arms are still present today, especially in cities, municipalities, counties, states and countries. They are emblems of sovereignty whose content and design are subject to the rules and customs of heraldry and are legally sanctioned.

In his lecture, Jörg Mantzsch will cover topics such as the origin and social significance of coats of arms, structure and rules, aristocratic coats of arms, who can bear a coat of arms and the changing nature of coats of arms.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, 8 October 2025 at 5 pm in the administrative building of the Börde district at Bornsche Straße 2 in Haldensleben.

The event is free of charge. Please register in advance by emailing wirtschaft(at)landkreis-boerde.de or calling 03904 7240-1257.
