Heart Week in the Börde district Day 3 - Nutrition and heart health

Can you remember your favourite childhood meal?

When children are asked about their favourite food, the answers are often pasta with tomato sauce, pizza, chips with nuggets, fish fingers or ice cream. Of course they all taste good, but a healthy and balanced diet should be more varied. Plant-based foods such as fruit and vegetables, nuts and pulses as well as potatoes and wholegrain products form the basis of a healthy diet. Animal foods (meat, fish, eggs, dairy products) should be added as a supplement. Sugar and salt should be consumed sparingly and in moderation. When it comes to drinks, water is still the healthiest option alongside unsweetened tea.

A healthy diet strengthens your heart and prevents heart disease. The Mediterranean diet in particular is considered to be heart-healthy. This includes fresh and preferably unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruit, pulses, wholemeal products, fish, seafood and cold-pressed olive oil. Mediterranean herbs and garlic serve as spices.

Excessive consumption of foods high in sugar, salt and fat favours risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar and blood lipid levels, which can have a negative impact on heart health.

Therefore, pay attention to your diet and protect your heart!
