Heart Week in the Börde district Day 1 - Our heart

Did you know that an octopus has three hearts? Did you also know that the heart of a blue whale is about the size of a small car and is therefore one of the largest hearts? Or did you know that the heart of the Etruscan shrew beats 1,500 times a minute?

In contrast, our human heart only weighs around 300 grams. It beats around 60 to 80 times a minute and pumps blood continuously through our circulatory system. This supplies the body with oxygen and nutrients. This is why the heart is also known as the engine of life.

Various risk factors can damage our "engine" and lead to cardiovascular disease. However, the risk of heart disease can often be avoided by adopting a healthy lifestyle. The following have a positive influence on our heart health:

  • Regular exercise

  • Avoiding excess weight

  • A healthy diet

  • Regular and sufficient sleep

  • Relaxation and stress reduction

  • Staying/becoming nicotine and smoke-free

  • Keeping an eye on blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar

  • Take advantage of preventive medical check-ups

Our heart works hard. Keep it healthy!
