New bat perennial bed created at the Oschersleben site

After the successful application for the 5th edition of the SUNK (Foundation for Environment, Nature and Climate Protection of the State of Saxony-Anhalt) - Box 2025 by the climate protection management in the Office for Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection, the bed was planted with a special selection of plants by the local caretakers on behalf of SUNK.

The box contained a total of 22 plants. Tall perennials (common night violet, dove's head cinquefoil, white campion, etc.) and low perennials such as wild marjoram were planted and a flower seed mixture was applied to the border. An information sign will also be put up.

The plant mix in this bed is primarily intended to attract various nocturnal insects. Many of these plants flower during the day as well as at night and have a strong scent that attracts moths, midges and beetles, among others. The insects provide an ideal food source for bats.

Green spaces with nocturnal flowers and structurally rich planting can help to protect these special animals. Bats are fascinating flying artists and the only mammals that can actively fly. At night, they hunt insects with their distinctive echolocation and need a lot of energy to do so (they consume around half their body weight in insects per night). However, due to the loss of suitable hunting grounds, many species can hardly find enough food in our heavily altered landscape. This bed is therefore not only intended to help the bats, but also to provide an alternative to the usual lawn.

Nature and climate protection can be so simple.

Why is this important? Because all 26 native bat species are endangered & we need more structure in the landscape.
