Detection of the raccoon roundworm in the Börde district: Monitoring provides current results

As part of its statutory duties in the area of animal health and consumer protection, the district of Börde regularly carries out tests on wild animals.

The samples are analysed for various pathogens at the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Consumer Protection (LAV) in Stendal. These include the raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis).

The current results of the monitoring (as at 31 December 2025) show that 33 per cent of the raccoons tested were found to be infested with raccoon roundworm.

Raccoon roundworm is a parasite that primarily infects raccoons, but can also be transmitted to other mammals and birds. Transmission to humans is possible and usually occurs through the ingestion of worm eggs, for example via soil contaminated with faeces.

In humans, infection often occurs without any recognisable symptoms. In rare cases, however, it can lead to serious health problems, such as neurological deficits, inflammation or visual impairment.

Against this background, the district of Börde recommends exercising particular caution when dealing with potential sources of infection. In particular, the following precautionary measures should be observed:

  • Avoid contact with wild animal faeces
  • Wear gloves and respiratory protection (e.g. FFP mask) during cleaning work
  • Thoroughly clean hands, shoes and tools
  • Cover sandpits and play areas
  • Do not dispose of food waste in the compost
  • Deworm dogs regularly

The district of Börde will continue to monitor the situation in order to observe the development of the infection and to be able to take appropriate measures to protect the population at an early stage.

The Office for Health and Consumer Protection is available to answer any questions.
