To date, this area has been designated as a shared footpath and cycle path. However, the structural conditions, in particular the construction width and the colour-contrasting paving, suggest that the path is not suitable for shared use by pedestrians and cyclists.
The signage is therefore expected to be adapted from 15 September 2025: In future, the path will be designated as a footpath with the additional sign "Cyclists free". This regulation allows cyclists to use the pavement in both directions, but only with special consideration for pedestrian traffic.
This means that
- Pedestrians have priority: cyclists must neither endanger nor obstruct pedestrians. If necessary, stop or dismount.
- Dismount at junctions: Cyclists are obliged to wait at every junction and must dismount to cross the carriageway.
- Increased safety: The aim of the measure is to improve the separation of traffic types and thus increase safety - especially for pedestrians.
District Administrator Martin Stichnoth asks all road users for their understanding: "With this new regulation, we want to avoid conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists and increase safety for everyone. Consideration and caution in road traffic are the be-all and end-all."
