District administrator backs peaceful protests by farmers

Statement by District Administrator Martin Stichnoth on the farmers' protests:

"The Börde district is a rural district and is strongly characterized by agriculture and its farmers. Sixty-five percent (around 155,000 hectares) of the Börde district alone is used for agriculture. Potatoes, grain and beets are grown here, among other things. The work of the farmers and their products must be appreciated accordingly. This is undoubtedly the case in our district.

I therefore stand behind the peaceful protests by our farmers, who are clearly pointing out the current and expected shortcomings. They have already had to put up with numerous hurdles, regulations and financial burdens.

If we as a society want to continue to receive regional food from our farmers, something has to change fundamentally. Farmers have my full respect for their work, which also means that I am happy to continue to stand by our district farmers' association and the farmers' association as a partner."
