Börde district becomes nationwide project municipality for mobility survey

The Börde district was informed on 13 April 2026 that it had successfully applied to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) as one of the nationwide project municipalities for the mobility survey and was selected by a jury. As part of the project, survey and survey methods are being developed by experts within the project. The aim is to determine local mobility behaviour, satisfaction with existing services and existing obstacles to the use of environmentally friendly means of transport. The project aims to include all population groups in the survey, regardless of age, physical condition or car ownership.

Mobility surveys are a key instrument of modern transport planning. They provide reliable data on mobility behaviour, the needs of different population groups and their satisfaction with existing transport services. For local authorities, they are a valuable basis for developing targeted measures, underpinning political decisions and making their own work transparent and comprehensible. However, small and medium-sized local authorities in rural areas often face particular challenges: limited human resources, a lack of capacity for tenders or the development of their own questionnaires, as well as uncertainties regarding implementation and evaluation. The project is developing a survey kit for mobility surveys specifically for small and medium-sized municipalities. They can use the kit for their work free of charge.

To ensure that the survey runs smoothly on site, the Federal Institute also provides the district with A) compact instructions that guide step-by-step through planning, implementation, evaluation and follow-up communication; B) concrete implementation suggestions for analogue and digital surveys (including tips on open source solutions) and C) a comprehensible evaluation aid that enables even inexperienced employees to use the data sensibly.
