Börde district issues general order to protect against avian influenza

On 22 October 2025, the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (classical avian influenza) in wild birds was officially suspected in the district of Börde. In order to protect domestic and farm poultry stocks, the district of Börde has therefore issued a general ruling under animal health law, which comes into force on the day after its publication and must be implemented immediately.

Essential content of the general ruling:

  1. Anyone keeping poultry or captive birds of other species in the Börde district must keep them either in closed sheds or under a device consisting of an overhanging, watertight cover secured against entry from above and a side fence with a mesh width of no more than 25 millimetres to prevent the entry of wild birds.
  2. The organisation of events involving poultry, such as exhibitions, markets or shows, is prohibited throughout the district of Börde.
  3. Acutely ill or suddenly dead poultry must be reported immediately and on a daily basis to the Office for Health and Consumer Protection of the district of Börde.

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that particularly affects poultry and other bird species. Transmission to humans is rare, but cannot be completely ruled out in individual cases. The district of Börde would like to point out that the measures taken serve the purpose of preventive health protection and animal disease control.

District Administrator Martin Stichnoth appeals to all poultry farmers in the district to conscientiously implement the ordered measures and strictly adhere to the biosecurity requirements: "Only by acting together and responsibly can we prevent the virus from spreading further in domestic poultry flocks."
