Background:

To mark World Children's Day on September 20, 2023, numerous initiatives nationwide will hold local demonstrations, festivals and other events to draw attention to the situation of children and young people and focus on their concerns and needs.

September 21, 1954 was the birth of World Children's Day. At that time, the United Nations recommended to its member states at the 9th General Assembly that they establish a worldwide day for children.

The purpose was threefold:

  1. To strengthen advocacy for children's rights.
  2. Friendship among children and young people around the world should be promoted.
  3. Governments should make a public commitment to support UNICEF's work.

Today, World Children's Day is celebrated in more than 145 countries.

The official date of World Children's Day in Germany is September 20. All children's and youth organizations use this Children's Day to draw attention to the situation of children worldwide with demonstrations, family celebrations and other events.
