First working meeting of the moorland protection dialogue forum in the Börde district - working together to preserve our moors

On 9 and 10 October 2025, the dialogue forum for moorland protection kicked off in the Börde district. The aim of the event was to strengthen the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders in the interests of sustainable moorland protection. Representatives from agriculture, authorities, ministries and nature conservation came together in the Oschersleben district administration to jointly develop ways to preserve and sustainably develop local moorland landscapes.

Increasing drought and the loss of surface water also pose a growing challenge in the Börde district. Moorland areas such as the Große Bruch are particularly affected by the drying out. Under these difficult conditions, strategies need to be developed to better retain surface water and thus protect the soil and nature in the long term. However, the protection of these sensitive ecosystems can only succeed if the interests of land users and nature conservation are considered together and solutions are developed in a cooperative manner.

The dialogue forum is part of a nationwide model project of the Federal Ministry for the Environment. In three model regions - the Große Bruch (Saxony-Anhalt), the Conventer Niederung (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and the Rambower Moor (Brandenburg) - participation processes for moorland protection are being developed and trialled. The focus is on open exchange and constructive dialogue on site.

A key issue was finding the right time to involve those directly affected and the interested public. A representative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment also presented the latest funding opportunities for moorland protection. A highlight of the two-day meeting was the excursion to the Große Bruch, where water management, nature conservation and agricultural challenges and possible solutions could be discussed directly on site.

The district of Börde would like to thank all participants for the constructive dialogue and committed cooperation. The dialogue forum represents an important step towards jointly developing viable perspectives for moorland protection.
