Official suspicion of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza

On 13 March 2026, an outbreak of classical avian influenza (highly pathogenic avian influenza - HPAI) was officially detected in another poultry farm in the Börde district.

HPAI is a highly contagious viral disease of poultry. It usually causes severe general symptoms in domestic poultry and has a very high mortality rate. There is a risk of infection for humans through intensive contact with infected poultry.

The outbreak is the second outbreak in the Börde district since 1 March 2026, but it is located outside of already established restriction zones. The existing restriction zones remain unchanged.

Due to the current risk situation, the Office for Health and Consumer Protection of the district of Börde would like to call on all poultry owners to check their biosecurity measures and to adhere to them consistently. The office must be informed if signs of illness such as shortness of breath, sneezing, apathy or increased deaths in the flock are detected.

When hunting game birds, the basic hygiene requirements must be observed and the shot animals must not be brought into contact with domestic poultry. Hunting game birds is prohibited in the designated restriction zones.

The public is required to report dead birds and observations of abnormal behaviour in wild birds.

Further information on classical avian influenza can be found on the district's homepage and on the FLI website:
