Ideas competition for the transnational Helmstedt mining district - Börde district presents competition entries

The renaturalisation and structural reorganisation following the end of lignite mining in Germany is a major challenge for the respective local authorities: The course has to be set for the transition of some huge areas to an economically successful future and regional development prospects. This also includes the Helmstedt mining district, which connects Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt - an area of around 4,500 hectares that will be put to subsequent use.

The aim of an open space planning ideas competition was to develop a holistic approach for the transformation of the former lignite mining area in the district of Helmstedt and Börde. The initiators and organisers of the competition were the Greater Braunschweig Regional Association and the Buschhaus Planning Association in December 2024. The implementation was also financially supported by Wirtschaftsregion Helmstedt GmbH.

After the competition was announced, twelve planning offices from all over Germany worked on a vision and spatial strategy for the 4,500 hectares in the east of the regional association area and the far west of the Börde district (Saxony-Anhalt) by the deadline of 1 April 2025 and finally submitted their contribution.

The award ceremony for the ideas competition "Transformation - from lignite mining area to green energy landscape" took place in Helmstedt on 13 June 2025. The winning team comes from southern Germany: "Glück Landschaftsarchitektur GmbH" together with "Labor für urbane Orte und Prozesse", both from Stuttgart.

Interested parties can already get an impression now, as the twelve submitted concepts will be on display from 11 to 22 August 2025 in the district of Börde, Bornsche Straße 2, Haldensleben. They can be visited during regular opening hours:
