3 December - Day of people with disabilities

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves to raise awareness of the concerns of people with disabilities and to campaign for their rights and participation.

It is intended to affirm full participation and equality in all areas of life worldwide and to draw attention to existing disadvantages and prejudices in order to promote the removal of barriers.

Since 1994, the German Basic Law has stipulated that "no one [...] may be disadvantaged because of their disability".

With the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD), people with disabilities can refer to a comprehensive set of binding regulations. It defines disability as the interaction of physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments and social or infrastructural barriers.

According to the State Statistical Office, 11,120 people with a severe disability live in the Börde district. The district of Börde is committed to equal opportunities for all people - regardless of whether they have a disability or not.

To mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December 2025, the Börde district's participation officer, Andrea Watteroth, would like to focus on the expansion of inclusive municipal services in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Over the past few months, she has been thinking about how the comprehensive participation, equality and self-determination of people with disabilities and the defence of their interests can be realised in the district of Börde.

Under the motto "Not without us above us", the establishment of an inclusion advisory board was prepared with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders. In view of our ageing society, accessibility and greater participation are an important investment in the future of our district, explained Ms Watteroth. Today, 3 December 2025, the Börde district council will decide on the establishment of an advisory board for people with disabilities.

The inclusion advisory board represents the interests of people with disabilities and has the following tasks, among others

  • It advises political bodies,
  • promotes and monitors the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and campaigns for barrier-free public buildings, transport and housing.
  • is involved in projects to improve the living situation,
  • serves as a point of contact for private individuals, public institutions and organisations
  • ensures the inclusion of disabled people in political decision-making processes and promotes their self-determination.

The organisation supports projects such as integration in schools and kindergartens or the promotion of training and employment.

Interested citizens can apply for membership of the Inclusion Advisory Council at the local participation management centre.

We cordially invite all people in the Börde district to participate in this overall process.
