9 September - Day of the alcohol-impaired child

According to estimates, around 800,000 people in Germany are affected by foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) (Federal Ministry of Health, 2022). FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) is the generic term for all damage to the child caused by alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancy. When the pregnant woman consumes alcohol, the alcohol enters the baby's bloodstream directly via the umbilical cord. Within a few minutes, mother and child have the same alcohol level. Even with low or only occasional alcohol consumption, the unborn child can be irreversibly damaged.

The consequences are manifold

Short stature, underweight, small head, facial changes, eye malformations, organic damage, skeletal malformations, mental and motor developmental delays, behavioural disorders, mental retardation, reduced intelligence.

  • Babies with FASD: extreme restlessness, crying spells, sleep and failure to thrive due to inhibited brain development

  • Infants with FASD: possible developmental delay, e.g. in speech and motor skills, sleep problems (often irritable), frequent infections, generally very care-intensive

  • In adolescence and adulthood: difficulties in general coping with everyday life and in dealing with the social environment, problems in structuring the day, living independently, dealing with money, etc.

FASD is

  • not curable!

  • 100% preventable!

  • not always visible!

Prevention of FASD

  • Complete abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy
  • Education and public relations work
  • Counselling for pregnant women and their caregivers
  • Information on bottles/cans containing alcoholic beverages
