Travelling exhibition "Women in Divided Germany" at the Haldensleben District Office

To mark International Women's Day, the Haldensleben District Office is showing the travelling exhibition "Women in Divided Germany" from 9 to 27 March 2026. The poster exhibition invites visitors to question common ideas about women in East and West and to take a fresh look at the actual realities of life in the 1970s and 1980s.

The large-format posters juxtapose everyday life, role models and social expectations of women in the Federal Republic and the GDR. The show visualises how different the political conditions were and how similar many experiences nevertheless remained. It shows women who fought for freedom, bore responsibility and asserted their place in a male-dominated system.

The exhibition picks up on widespread attributions and contrasts these with real biographies and historical facts. This makes it clear how contradictory many of these images are and how little they do justice to the diverse lives of women. At the same time, the exhibition invites us to ask whether women in both German states shared a common quest for self-determination despite all their differences.

The exhibition with 21 DIN A1 posters can be borrowed by educational establishments, associations and interested institutions from the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Börde district, Ms Katja Klommhaus.
